“Only Mildly Neighbour Unfriendly Experimental Music Night” Presented by Repressed Records as part of the Newtown Festival, featuring the stark, eerie electronics of Half High (Matthew Hopkins and Lucy Phelan of Naked On The Vague) and the cassette loop & synthesizer explorations of Exotic Dog (Nic Warnock of Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, Ruined Fortune, Model Citizen).
Half High is a project by Lucy Phelan and Matthew P. Hopkins, both known for their work with a number of Sydney based groups, most notably as founding members of the band Naked On the Vague. Half High create a slightly damaged form of ambience through meditative synth lines, various electronics, and atmospheric tape manipulation. Half High map a sonic terrain that is in parts alien and industrial, and in certain locations, tranquil and mesmerising.
Exotic Dog is the solo project of Nic Warnock (Model Citizen, Ruined Fortune, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, R.I.P. Society label-head). Using his trusty cassette four-track recorder, voice, synthesizer and field recordings he creates disorientating sound collages with a loose feeling of narrative. Moments are almost rhythmic and loop like, occasionally melodic, completely abstract or somewhere in between.
